Pole barns & metal buildings

Closed-cell spray foam is almost always the best choice. Applied to the underside of the steel, it insulates and creates a moisture barrier that eliminates the condensation metal buildings suffer — something fiberglass can't do and may even worsen. For finished living space we combine foam with additional insulation to hit code R-values.

Condensation forms when warm, moist inside air hits cold steel and turns to water that drips down. The reliable fix is closed-cell spray foam applied directly to the underside of the metal roof and walls — it removes the cold condensing surface and seals out moisture. Either works, but during construction is ideal because the steel is clean and accessible. We insulate both new builds (coordinated with your builder) and existing pole barns and shops — for existing buildings we just need clean, dry steel for the foam to bond properly.

Most homes benefit most from a well-insulated, air-sealed attic (R-49 to R-60 for our climate), plus attention to walls, rim joists, and crawlspaces. The right mix depends on your home's age and construction. It varies by service, building size, and R-value target. A straightforward attic top-up is very cost-effective, while spray foam, metal-building, or whole-home projects cost more. It depends on your starting point, but bringing an under-insulated, leaky home up to modern standards commonly cuts heating and cooling costs meaningfully — often on the order of 15–30% or more. Attic insulation and air sealing typically deliver the fastest payback of any home improvement.

Northern Colorado sees single-digit winter nights, relentless wind, big temperature swings, and intense sun. Insulation and air sealing keep conditioned air inside and comfort stable through all of it. A poorly insulated building fights the climate every day; a well-insulated one works with it.

R-values & the high-plains climate

Greeley and Weld County are in a cold climate zone (roughly Zone 5), where recommended attic insulation is typically R-49 to R-60. Many existing homes sit at R-30 or less. Bringing your attic up to target is usually the single highest-return efficiency upgrade available.

For our climate zone, a common target is around R-38 for the roof and R-25 for the walls, though it depends on how the building is used. A heated shop or finished space needs the full target; a cold building may only need enough closed-cell foam to control condensation. We spec it to your use and budget.

Wind-washing is when wind blowing in through the soffit vents strips heat and performance from the edges of your attic insulation — a real issue on the windy high plains. We install baffles and wind-wash dams to protect the insulation at the eaves so your attic performs across its whole area.

Only up to your climate's target. Reaching R-49 to R-60 in an attic is important; going well beyond that delivers diminishing returns. Once you're at target, air sealing usually provides more comfort and savings per dollar than adding more R-value.

Types of insulation

Each has its place. Spray foam offers the highest R-value per inch plus an air seal and moisture barrier (great for metal buildings, basements, and rim joists). Blown-in is fast and cost-effective for attics. Batts are reliable and economical in open framing. The best buildings use the right product on each surface — we design the combination.

Open-cell is lighter, expands more, and is a cost-effective air seal for interior walls and ceilings. Closed-cell is denser, has a higher R-value per inch, adds rigidity, and acts as a moisture and vapor barrier — which makes it the go-to for metal buildings, pole barns, crawlspaces, and rim joists in our climate.

Both work well. Cellulose is made largely from recycled paper, packs densely, and slows air movement well — an advantage in our wind. Fiberglass is lighter and settles less. We match the material to the space and your priorities.

Batts can work in framed pole-barn walls, but for the metal roof and walls of a pole barn or steel building, closed-cell spray foam is usually the better choice because it also controls condensation. We'll assess your building and recommend the right approach for each surface.

Attic, removal & new construction

Not always. If it's dry and in good condition, we can usually top up over it. But if it's wet, moldy, rodent-damaged (common in rural attics), or badly degraded, it should be removed first. We inspect and give you an honest recommendation — never an unnecessary tear-out.

It's a big part of the fix. Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts roof snow that refreezes at the cold eaves. Air sealing and proper attic insulation keep the roof deck cold and even, dramatically reducing ice dams. Adequate ventilation, which we address, completes the solution.
